These days, Google has updated its mapping software for smart phones to version 3.3. The big news in the new version is saved locations stored online (through an account) and synchronized between mobile phones and computers that are used in Google Maps.

New Google Maps 3.3 for S60 and Windows Mobile radically alter the way the program handles so-called landmarks. In older versions of Google Maps, mobile systems for local landmarks used. But now introduced its own system for favorites, called “stellar objects selected” or “starred items” in the English-language version. The system is online-based (like the buddy track service Latitude) and any favorite places thus stored locally on the phone.

At the first start of the new Google Maps 3.3 is copied mobile local favorites into Google’s online system where seats are called for stellar objects selected. In the details pane for a specific location / address is now the option “add as a star” which adds the location to the object list.

When the user at some future switch to a brand new mobile phone and have installed Google Maps, the list of stellar objects selected automatically displayed. When the user uses Google Maps on a PC, the star-marked to be displayed.

If and when the feature stellar objects selected is launched for other platforms such as the iPhone version does the future will tell.

Mobil rapid test of the synchronization of starred items in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N79 shows that the service functions essentially as promised. Unfortunately, the street numbers for addresses in some cases, changed a little bit (eg 5 to 3) when copying to stellar objects selected.

Google Maps, which is free but charge for data traffic to come, are available for most smartphones on the market system and a simpler mobile java version and installed most easily supplied with mobile browser from the following address: http://m.google.com/maps.
